The Outlook

As a remote refuge tucked into the side ofGrouse Mountain, The Outlook provides a sense of detachment by virtue of its secluded site. The program maintains this idea of separation by breaking into three distinct masses — separation in this case, creates connection. Detached pods foster a greater relationship to the surrounding forest by requiring a short walk through the woods for access, regardless of the season.

The home is separated into three forms —the primary living unit, the guest suite, and the detached den/office. This separation scatters the forms across the site like boulders on a hillside, each interacting with the mountain in a quiet and delicate manner. The structures strategically take into account surrounding views and topography while providing privacy from one another.

Clad in dark shou sugi ban cedar, the inner cores carve away to reveal warm wood cladding and expanses of glass. The simplicity of form is reiterated in the simplicity of plan, with a minimalist focus on functionality and connection to the mountain.
