Quamish Residence

Set within Spokane’s Five-Mile community, the Quamish Residence occupies a challenging infill site defined by exposed rock, narrow proportions, and steep slope easements. These constraints pushed the home tightly against the rear hillside, eliminating the possibility of a traditional backyard.

In response, the design creates a  at the street edge — an intimate outdoor room shielded from view yet open to light and air. Careful study of the site’s section and contours allowed retaining walls and the home itself to screen the courtyard from the side walk and street, while preserving framed views toward downtown Spokane. The result is a residence that turns site limitations into opportunities, balancing privacy and openness within a compact footprint.
