Overlooking the Spokane River, Split Rock Flats is located in Peaceful Valley — a neighborhood that feels a world apart from downtown, despite being only steps away. Nestled into the steep hillside, the project draws inspiration from the valley’s geologic character, situating itself like a cluster of rock outcroppings among the dry pines.
Rather than a single large mass, the project breaks down into smaller building forms, arranged delicately across the site. A unifying roofline ties the structures together, while varied footprints and shifting orientations mirror the scattered pattern of the valley’s boulders. The result is multifamily housing that feels cohesive yet sensitive to its historic, small-scale surroundings.
Colors of muted green and natural wood tones were chosen to blend with the vegetation and river corridor, allowing the architecture to camouflage rather than compete. With additional phases underway, Split Rock Flats continues to demonstrate how density can be introduced in fragile contexts without overwhelming them — offering new housing while honoring the unique character of Peaceful Valley.
